Car Rental

Cars can be rented in Montréal from local or international companies. Average cost per day for a medium-sized car is CAD $90. All cars are left-hand drive.

Getting Around Montreal

Public transport is a great way to see the city. Hop on the metro and in just 10 minutes you’re at a museum, restaurant or in Old Montréal. Affordable and reliable, the metro can be accessed via the city’s Underground Pedestrian Network: two of the four main lines connect downtown to major tourism sites as well as to numerous bus stops and train stations. Weekly passes are available. Métro operating hours are Monday to Friday and Sunday from 5:30 a.m. to 1 a.m., and Saturday from 5:30 a.m. to 1:30 a.m. The average wait time between trains is eight minutes and three minutes during rush hour. If you prefer getting around by taxi, it’s easy to flag one down on the street. You’ll also find them at one of the city’s many taxi stands or in front of most major hotels. A trip to the airport from downtown will cost you a flat rate of CAD 40 – not including tip. Some taxis will also transport bicycles. Renting a BiXi bike is another great and inexpensive alternative.

Visa Information

Visa Information Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA)

Canada has introduced a new entry requirement, known as an eTA, for visa-exempt foreign nationals travelling to Canada by air. Exceptions include U.S. citizens and travelers with a valid visa. Entry requirements for other methods of travel (land, sea) have not changed. Eligible travelers can apply online for an eTA. Travelers will need an eTA before they can board a flight to Canada. Find out more about Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA). (http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/visit/eta.asp) Countries that are not eligible under eTA may need to apply for a Visitors Visa. To check online – go to http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/index.asp and click “Visit” from the menu. Attendees from the USA may check entry / exit requirements to Canada outlined in the U.S. Department of State Consular Information website. Proof of citizenship must be provided.

Letter of Invitation for Visa Purposes

An official Letter of Invitation to obtain a Visa and authorization to attend the 42nd Meeting of the Cognitive Science Society (CogSci 2019) will be issued ONLY after registration has been completed and full payment received by the Conference Secretariat.

Submission of Applications

Canada does not have a visa office in every province so it is important that delegates visit the website of the Canadian visa office responsible for processing their visa application. Information is available on the website on how to submit a visa application and the documentation required.

Processing times for visa applications vary depending on the visa office and the time of the year. Participants are encouraged to apply approximately 12 weeks in advance of their departure date to ensure they receive the visa in time.

Electronic Applications (e-Apps) Submission at a Visa Application Centre (VAC) (In person or by mail)
This system allows clients to submit applications online. VACs are commercial service providers authorized by Canada to provide specific services to applicants
Delegates that choose to apply on-line will not have to submit their passport until requested to do so by a visa officer. VACs provide a number of services to clients, including help applicants fill out forms, answer questions and ensure that applications are complete
The visa office will send the applicant instructions on how and where to send their passports to finalize the visa process. Reduces unnecessary delays or refusals due to incomplete applications
VACs serve as a collection point for applicants required to provide a biometric.
VACs send applications to visa offices and transmit decisions to applicants in a secure and confidential manner.
VACs do not process visa applications and have no decision-making authority.
